  • Dr. Shimada served as the flight surgeon for Japanese astronaut Koichi Wakata during the Soyuz TMA-11M mission and his long-duration stay aboard the ISS Expeditions 38 and 39. Following the mission, he oversaw Wakata’s return and recovery after landing at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in May 2014

  • The day after landing with Japanese astronaut Koichi Wakata on mission STS-119 (15A) (March 2009, ISS assembly), following his long-duration stay aboard the ISS Expeditions 18, 19, and 20

  • An international medical team of flight surgeons from NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), ROSCOSMOS, and JAXA at the Kennedy Space Center

  • Flight surgeon for Japanese astronaut Soichi Noguchi during his long-duration mission aboard ISS Expeditions 22 and 23, immediately following the Soyuz capsule landing in Baikonur in June 2010

The Qazaq International Science and Technology Association (QIST) is honored to invite you to our Guest of Honor Seminar Series, featuring a distinguished speaker, Dr. Kazuhito Shimada, MD, PhD, MSc, FAsMA—a highly experienced former veteran Flight Surgeon for Japanese astronauts at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).

Dr. Shimada has been supporting Japanese astronaut spaceflight missions since 1995, working on the missions of Chiaki Mukai, Takao Doi, Akihiko Hoshide, and Koichi Wakata. He also contributed to Hoshide and Satoshi Furukawa's winter training, water survival training, and Furukawa's NEEMO mission, while overseeing health maintenance for all except the two latest astronauts, Ayu Yoneda and Makoto Suwa.

With a distinguished career spanning medical operations for Space Shuttle and Soyuz missions and participation in two saturation marine dive training programs, he will share his incredible journey as a flight surgeon at JAXA. This seminar will be a unique opportunity to gain insights from his tremendous experience in aerospace medicine (human spaceflight and medical operations). We will also hold a Q&A session, where you will have the chance to engage directly with Dr. Shimada.
